Planting Detonators/attaching components

Perhaps i am simply being stupid, but i find myself utterly unable to work out how to attach components to submarine walls (buttons, levers etc) as well as plant detonators in a way that they can be rewired and actually, you know, detonate. Is this explained in one of the tutorials? Does it require special tools?
