What was the point of Justin Cifaretto?

The episode Whoever Did This sloppily introduces Ralphie has a son and gravely injures him all but 30 minutes before Ralphie finally gets killed off. Ralphie has been a main character of the show for more than a season and a half and somehow this is the first time we're learning he was ever married and has a kid. And after this episode, Justin is never mentioned again despite being left in critical condition.

I guess it's to show something that would drive Ralphie over the edge and kill Pie-O-My, but I have no trouble believing he'd be willing to do that on his best day and I doubt many viewers would either. My best guess is it exists to humanize Ralphie right before Tony kills him to make Tony look like even more of an asshole for committing an act that viewers would otherwise be totally cool with, but it feels so shoehorned in since they saved this character development for almost literally the last minute. Like they were writing the episode where Ralphie gets murdered and went "OH SHIT we forgot to give him any relatable characteristics!". I also don't think having a son that you care about a little bit means you don't deserve to get your head bashed in with a frying pan for murdering a pregnant woman.
