Do cats exhibiting non-recognition aggression actually ever realize the cat is their old companion, or do they never realize it but “tolerate” the cat?

Just wondering, do cats that act aggressive actually realize the cat they are attacking is a cat they used to know and love, or do they forever think it’s a new cat and just learn to tolerate them?
