i don't understand the seattle food hate

I don't understand the hate for Seattle's food scene. I feel like most people hating on Seattle's food scene are comparing it to places like NYC, SF, and Chicago, which are larger/denser cities.

Yes, the food is pretty expensive, but I would say Austin (where I live now) has more "I feel ripped off by what I just paid for" moments than Seattle, where food is pricey but I generally feel like what I get for that price is good.

For someone like me that LOVES asian food and seafood, Seattle is awesome. It also feels like farmer's markets and grocery stores here offer some nice fresh ingredients (altho pricey). And then there are random other niches that are well-served here, such as Somali, Ethiopian, or Carribbean food. No every niche is not well-represented here, but again, Seattle is not London or NYC.

Here are some criticisms I'd have for Seattle food:

  1. Closes early/late night eats can be tough
  2. Southern, cajun, and mexican food is lacking
  3. Although the asian food is very good, places like SF and Vancouver still probably edge it out overall
  4. Cheap street eats and diners are somewhat lacking but this is true across much of the expensive US metro areas unfortunately

edit: forgot to mention Oysters specifically. I am not a huge oyster guy but I think I had the best oyster of my life the other day here in Seattle.
