Narratives on the effects of the sanctions against Russia
Hi everyone,
I’m working on an academic project where I examine how different groups of Russians discuss the country’s economic situation and the effects of sanctions. I’m particularly interested in how narratives around economic stability and uncertainty take shape in different online communities.
I’ve already explored some Telegram channels and VK groups, but I would love to better understand where Russian (both domestically and abroad) typically discuss these topics. I’d really appreciate any insights on the following:
1. Which platforms and communities do Russians use to discuss economic issues? (For example, Reddit, Discord, Telegram, Facebook?)
2. Are there specific subreddits, Telegram channels, or forums where discussions among Russian expats are particularly active?
3. Are there recurring narratives or arguments that commonly appear in these discussions about Russia’s economy and sanctions?
4. How do these discussions differ from those happening inside Russia?
I understand this can be a sensitive topic, so any tips or references – even anonymously – would be greatly appreciated, since I’m not used to browsing Russian social media (in a language that I don’t speak). Of course, I will respect privacy, and any information will be used purely for academic analysis.
Thanks in advance for your time and insights! And please let me know if I cross any boundaries, this is my first time doing a digital ethnographic project.
